The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2
This is the prophecy ofJesus: that one is coming that would bring light into deepest darkness. John writes: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (1:5). Darkenss is no match for Light!
Jesus tells us we carry a similar light:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
Our leaders challenged us to be Jesus to the people of Patpong… to interact in such a way that we would bring light; the embodiment of the Christ. This theme has stayed with me throughout the week. Patpong 1 (the first street) is a very bright area. The thousands of lights are meant to attract visitors. They promise lies of companionship and excitment. They whisper ideas of fullfillment. These are no lights at all, but darkness masqerading as light. We are the light of the world, called to run into the darkness. For if no one is willing to go, how will the love of Christ be illuminated? It is through obediance that we do not surpress this light, but boldly walk into the world of lies and point the way to Jesus.
We do not know the legacy of light we bring, but it may be far more reaching than what we imagine. Thursday I recieved the sad news that my Grandmother had passed away. I began to reflect on her life and how many of my childhood memories have her fingerprints on it. My grandmother's legacy of light flows from her to my mother and on to me. Her faithfulness and obedience to Christ has far reaching effects. She is the heritage of my faith. So yesterday as we ministered, carrying our lights, I praised Jesus that my grandmother had a part in sparking my love for Jesus, so that I may let my little light shine!
